But again, all such interpretations are ‘informed guesses’ that may evolve as we find out more about our past. Our group identified one of the broken buildings at Dholavira as a possible ‘astronomer’s room’ to keep track of the Sun’s movement and accordingly create a calendar. We face similar challenges while studying astronomical beliefs of more advanced cultures like the Harappan culture, as even in those cases, the language remains unknown and we can only interpret their motives based on our limited knowledge of those civilisations. ![]() But a lot more work has to happen to look at all those sites in a systematic manner. ![]() As shown by one of our group members, erect stone slabs (aka Menhirs) at Nilaskal near Mangalore may have been arranged to match with sunrise-sunset on important days. In fact, we know more than 200 megalithic sites south of Vindhyas, which include all varieties like burial chambers and stone circles. The Stonehenge in the UK is a famous example, but there are many such megaliths around the world. They built stone burial chambers for their dead, sometimes made stone circles around their burials, while also creating large stone circles or erecting large stones in the middle of nowhere for no apparent reason. We refer to them as “megalithic cultures” (mega = large, lithos = stone). Pleiades cluster in different cultures (Prof Mayank Vahia )Īnother interesting aspect of some of these cultures is their use of large stones in their social practices. In the figure below, we have reproduced the perception of the Pleiades cluster in different cultures. Depending on the culture, the same objects may look very different from different cultures. Our group also conducted a study with Gonds of Central India and some of the Nicobar tribes, which indicated tantalising possibilities about the seafaring practices of Nicobar tribes and the antiquity of migration of Gonds in central India. Around the world, archaeo-astronomers conduct interviews with Native Americans or Australian aboriginals or tribes of the Amazon to understand their astronomical beliefs and trace paths through shared knowledge. The quality of those interpretations may differ based on what would be cognitively plausible for humans at that time and what supporting evidence is presented with the interpretation.Īnother way to explore those ancestors would be to learn from the present-day cultures that have not mingled enough with modern society. They can be interpreted in multiple ways, none of which can claim 100% certainty. A word of caution though: All drawings of early humans, at this stage of development, are very rudimentary. Scientists were able to show that this drawing may well have been a depiction of a supernova which lit up the ancient sky.Īncient drawings on rocks and stones (Indira Gandhi National Centre For Arts (IGNCA)) We knew from other evidence that this drawing had to be at least 4,500 years old. Mayank Vahia, looked at some of the astronomical symbols and tried to reinterpret what those ancient painters were trying to convey.įor example, at Burzahoma near Srinagar, a hunting scene was drawn on a small rock, which showed two equally bright objects like the Sun or the Moon. Our group, the Archaeoastronomy research group at TIFR, Mumbai led by Prof. We have found thousands of such rock paintings/carvings from Kashmir in North India, to all the way in the south. It turns out, these primitive groups knew how to draw pictures, and since they did not possess slates, paper or canvasses, they drew on the cave walls or carved on the stones around them. Sun God (Indira Gandhi National Centre For Arts (IGNCA))Ĭan we gain any insights about the astronomy of these men and women who predate civilisation itself?

Sodomic Baptism plays a style of satanic death metal that is very heavily rooted in the 90's while also adding in a creativity that was rarely used in the 9's, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover Satanism and Occultism themes. When the music speeds up a great amount of blast beats can be heard while the music is very heavily rooted in the early 90's along with the solos and leads also remaining very true to an old school style and the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts, spoken words are also added briefly on some of the later tracks and as the album progresses a brief use of horror movie style keyboards and clean playing can be heard as well as a couple of songs being very long and epic in length, Sister Maria is known in the convent for her good works and charity, but, in the secret depths of her sexual fantasies, she is tormented by visions of another. Ritualistic spoken words and demonic voices start off the album before going into more of a heavier musical direction where you can also hear all of the musical instruments that are present on this recording along with the riffs also using a decent amount of melody while t he vocals are mostly death metal growls with a few screams. ![]() ![]() ![]() Sodomic Baptism are a band from Belarus that plays an old school form of satanic death metal and this is a review of their 2017 album "Black Fire Pandemonium" which was released by Iron, Blood And Death Corporation. Raised by a family of dingoes, a young feral girl heads for Babylon, Australia to find her family, only to find that her mother is not all she seems. The family wrapped her up in a tarp or rug and tied her to the roof of their car. Before there were cell phones, a grandmother was said to have passed away somewhere inconvenient. Would you buy a new BMW convertible for $500, for example, if this was the case? The Stolen Grandmother is told less often nowadays, but was once a well documented Urban Legend. The Death Car is the story about an expensive car being sold unreasonably cheap because someone has died in it. Dorsen said in Our Living Traditions that, “Urban Legends deal with the ghostly hitchhiker, the stolen grandmother, and the death car.” Published in 1968, this is likely the first modern definition of Urban Legend. Urban Legends would more aptly be called contemporary legends. “ Urban Legend” was also used in a 1925 New York Times article, but in an unrelated context. It was used in a 1931 Vanity Fair article along with “Folklore of the Metropolis” to describe odd, fictitious stories. Urban Legend, as a term, is believed to have emerged out of America. The definition can be confusing, as an Urban Legend does not need to take place in a city and can have a rural setting. The stories will often be similar to one another, but will have contrasting details such as where, when, and to who the events happened to. ![]() ![]() This is often determined because the same events are said to have happened in several different geographical areas to more than one person. The Vanishing Hitchhiker by Jan Harold Brunvand defines an Urban Legend as a “realistic story concerning recent events (or alleged events) with an ironic or supernatural twist.” The teller of the story believes the legend is true, and that the events actually happened to someone just out of reach–to a friend of a friend, for example, or to somebody’s relative.Īn Urban Legend is not believed to be true by academics or investigators. Sound aside, with its “aggressive sci-fi looks”, the Piezoelectric Violin might seem as though it belongs in science fiction rather than a symphony hall, but it is part of a long tradition of unusual instruments that have pushed at the boundaries of engineering, science, music and magic. “More or less like classical bowed strings. On the other hand, they do have a character all their own as a result of the materials and methods in which they are formed. Consider the tonality of classical guitar against that of the Les Paul electric guitar: they do sound the same in a sense, yet also quite different.” “With each of our original instruments, a certain functionality and ergonomic structure is preserved: this is why we can call our violin a violin, our cello, a cello, and so forth. There is a certain physical standard of componentry which must be maintained.” And what will they sound like? “Quite similar to what one expects,” Goldemberg says. I ask him if the two-string violin is still, at its heart, a violin. He and Zalcberg were interested to explore a “new conception for violin core functionality”, and the instrument – which will be exhibited alongside other curious sonic specimens including their take on the cello, a ‘hornucopia’,and Hall’s ‘monobaribasitar’ – is the result of “intense research on design and computation, leading to direct engagement with musicians, luthiers, composers and interactive artists of different kinds”. “Our desire to create unusual instruments emerged when we realised the aesthetic and technical issues we were facing as architects did not differ much from those of musicians and composers,” Goldemberg tells me. ![]() Or should that be ‘printed’? The two-string Piezoelectric Violin is the brainchild of architects Eric Goldemberg and Veronica Zalcberg of Miami’s MONAD studio, in collaboration with multi-instrumentalist Scott F Hall, who has been dreaming up ways to fabricate exotic instruments since the 1990s. We’ve got more Chinese music to come on the blog, including bamboo instruments such as the Chinese flute known as the xiao.Next month, visitors to the Inside 3D Printing conference at the Javits Center in New York City will have the chance to see – and hear – one of the most radical musical instruments ever created. Who knows, maybe some day it will make its way into Western orchestras. Let’s hope that this unique and traditional Chinese instrument manages to stick around. Sadly, many Chinese orchestras these days prefer using the cello and double bass in favor of the Ge Hu. Although this instrument is very similar to the cello, they sound completely different. It has four strings tuned exactly like those of a cello (C-G-D-A). ![]() While most traditional Chinese instruments are high-pitched and nasal, the Ge Hu was created to provide a full and low-pitched sound, thus enlarging the scope of Chinese music. ![]() In a Chinese orchestra, they take on the same role as the cello and the double bass in their Western counterpart. This instrument comes in two sizes, the big Ge Hu (大革胡 – dà gé hú) and the bass Ge Hu (低音革胡 – dī yīn gé hú). In its name, the character 革 means “revolutionary,” and that it is. One of his compositions, Autumn Moon Over Calm Lake (平湖秋月 – píng hú qiū yuè) was written in the 1930s and remains popular to this day.Īutumn Moon Over Calm Lake performance, including the Gao Hu. Actually, the modern day Gao Hu was developed by Lv Wencheng (吕文成 – Lǚ wén chéng), a Chinese composer and musician who was known as a master of Cantonese music (广东音乐 – guǎng dōng yīn yuè). It is used primarily in Cantonese music and opera. While most Hu Qin are placed on the left thigh, the Gao Hu is held in between the knees. Also, the neck is shorter and the soundbox smaller than its more famous musical cousin. While the Zhong Hu has that low, alto sound, the Gao Hu has a higher pitch, as it is tuned a fourth to a fifth higher than the Er Hu. ![]() As it is an alto instrument with two octaves, the Zhong Hu gives off a deep and gloomy tone.Ī Zhong Hu solo entitled Remembrance 1937. Its two strings are tuned to a perfect fifth (usually G and D or A and E), and it is often used in orchestras or as a solo instrument. The shape is a bit larger, and it generates a much lower pitch.
